Recommendation on stimulating student participation (9 May 2017)
Student participation is anchored in Flanders. Students therefore participate in both Flemish education policy and in the various levels of policy of higher education institutions. In this way, they can express their views on a variety of policy themes. Student participation promotes, on the one hand, the democratic level of governance of higher education institutions and, on the other hand, is an opportunity for students to develop to critical citizens.
In recent years, student participation has become increasingly difficult. Mandates are more difficult to fill in at Flemish and local level, and student representatives find it more difficult to combine their engagement with their studies.
In this recommendation, the Vlor addresses a number of participation thresholds and suggests a number of solutions.
